Rewire Part 4 is now available

The articles about my experience rewiring my Hustler 30 Hariette B continues. This time it’s all about my experience around sizing and selecting a Solar charger to fit to Hariette B. As you can see from the image below it’s a budget, compact, rail mounted trickle charger but it’s exactly what I needed. Hopefully the article will help you determine if a Solar charger is useful to you or not.

Rewire Part 3 is now available

The article about my experience rewiring my Hustler 30 Hariette B continues. This time it’s all about my experience with the Sterling Pro Split R. I’ve had such a good experience with this it’s been the best upgrade of the season for me. I have trouble free, automatic charging and battery selection. It was really easy to install, relatively inexpensive and something I will now always have on any boat I buy.

Part 4 will be next week. In the meantime feel free to click on the links below.

The ebb of the season

The end of the season draws close
Sad times for all at the moment, yes it’s nearly the end of the season. I had my last sail in Hariette B over the weekend. I’ve now changed the oil and filters and she’s ready for lift out. We didn’t have much of a season but I’m hoping the rest of you, like me, had the best of the worst season in years!

A brilliant Rainbow appeared as we were getting Hariette B ready for winter

There’s a new article – Rewiring Part 1
The first of a five part article is on the site. This is the promised rewiring article. I’ve waited until now as I wanted to ensure that what I’ve done is tested and I can write from experience. This way you all know the kit and the approach I’ve taken works.

When we look at rewiring the first and most important piece of work is the planning! This article covers this aspect and I’ve also made available 3 files to download. These are; 1) A 12volt handbook eBook for those who have no idea about 12volt electrics, 2) The wiring diagram I put together for Hariette B and finally 3) The spreadsheet I used to calculate amps, battery requirements and voltage drop.
The article can be found here and the files here… Enjoy!

Southampton Boat Show 2012 mini report

I hope people managed to take advantage of the discounted tickets.  Was at the boat show today and it was pretty quiet compared to previous years, talking to a few traders they all said peoples wallets were firmly in their pockets. It was nice to see a small but growing selection of British boats becoming more prevalent.  One such boat that caught my eye was the Stephen Jones designed Rustler 33.

A very nice boat, more a weekender than a cruiser so it was quite small below. However, the materials and craftsmanship looked pretty good from what I saw.

My jobs list for Hariette B this winter isn’t as big as the jobs list last year so I was on the look out for some replacement carpet sources, looking at the floors of the boats to see what veneers would suit my Hustler 30 and looking at alternatives to my current cockpit seats.  At present they are made from decking! I have no idea what the previous owner was thinking but it must be replaced this winter with something else.  I came across a company called Permateek.  They do a Teak replacement product but what’s different with these guys is they can also fabricate what appears to be solid blocks.

It looks pretty impressive and I think I’m going to use their product to replace my cockpit seats.

I’ve recently purchased a new stereo, the Fusion Marine RA-50. The mounting bracket I want although advertised by Fusion isn’t available in the UK yet so I was hoping to find a main dealer for more information. This was to no avail so I’ll be ordering the mount from the USA (This will also feature in an upcoming article). Other than that it was the usual great day out lots to see and do and it was great browsing around the other boats. I do enjoy looking around the boats for ideas around material combinations to use, new innovations and so on. If you’ve managed to get tickets check out the Oyster 725… lovely!

Happy New Year

I just thought I’d wish all HOA members a very Happy New Year!  2012 is going to see a lot of new features on the site.  Here’s a taster of some of the things I have planned for 2012:

  • More technical articles – I resume work on my Hustler 30 for the new season as I suspect most of you are. If any owners wish to contribute an article on anything you like regarding Hustlers just send me the text and any photos and I’ll add it all to the site
  • Further site enhancements such as members sailing blogs linked from the members register and from the main menu
  • Owners boat history. A lot of owners tell me some great stories about their boats when signing up I think it’d be really interesting for other owners to see that history I’ll also be looking to customise the feature so owners can also amend the story of their boats too
  • I’m writing to all the sailing press to let them know the HOA is alive and well. Hopefully we’ll see more new members joining as a result
  • I’m getting a number of flyers printed, I’ll be visiting as many Yacht Clubs and marinas as I can on my travels and pin our details on the boards (I travel a lot in my job)
  • The first HOA rally around the beginning of September – More details to come and discussion in the forum in a few weeks time

As usual I’m always after more photos, videos from all you members out there! The more I can get into the galleries the richer we all are as it helps give ideas to others.  Interior and Exterior shots are always appreciated.

So a lot to come during 2012 all we need now is the weather to co-operate for 2012 with balmy, breezy days to sail in :)

Fair winds to you all, here’s to 2012… Cheers!
