Changes coming

Hello Everyone!

Things have been pretty quiet on here as I’ve been so busy with work over the past few months. It’s brilliant that I’ve been so busy with work and with the glorious weather we have had over summer if I wasn’t working I was sailing! As a result I’ve not been able to update as much as I would like.

I’ve been thinking about some changes to the site. At present it’s too much for me to maintain and juggle everything else around as the software I use just isn’t as automated as I would like nor does it give you the reader of this site the flexibility you need to share photos and open discussions about anything. As much as I’ve searched and tried alternatives it all feels a bit klunky in places.

In order to cater for this I’m going to rejig the site and introduce a Facebook group. The Facebook group is up and can be found here https://www.facebook.com/groups/hustlerownersassociation. Once you are added to the group you should be able to create new posts, add/remove photos and just generally do things that aren’t possible with this site. The site will remain but I’m going to open it up a lot more and remove the registration element as I think it’s proving frustrating for some of you. Private messages etc. will still be possible via Facebook or directly via the site. The boat register will temporarily go offline until I can find an alternative way of maintaining a secure way of accessing.

So Thank you for being patient! I’m still here although very busy in the meantime give the Facebook group a try.

Andy

Finally, Spring is here!

Spring at last
Spring has finally arrived and I’m sure we’ve all been busy at the boatyard getting our Hustler’s ready for launch into the new season. The break in the cold weather allowed me to finally start and complete the replacement cockpit seat/locker lid project.

This has involved getting some custom made tops built and sent via a company called “Permateek” then removing the locker lids, remove the old wood and refitting. The before and after results are below (Whilst it was dry I also scrubbed clean and applied some Teak Oil to the Toerail and coachroof grab handles :-)).

New Cockpit Seats

As you can see a vast improvement and so much better to stand, sit and kneel on. The old garden decking that was used, whilst strong was supremely uncomfortable and just didn’t fit with a boat such as the Hustler! An article will appear in the next week or so outlining how I installed it, how much it cost and my experience with the different synthetic teak suppliers when researching this.

I wish everyone the best of luck with their refits and hopefully we’ll all be back in the water by the end of May! Come on summer, you owe us all fair winds and great sunshine after last year! :-)

New Article: Renovate Teak Locker Tops

Renovating Teak Locker Tops
HOA member KevO has submitted a new article to the HOA sharing his experience on Renovating his Teak Locker Tops on his Hustler 30 “Whitecap”. The article covers how he removed, rescued then restored his tops. Many thanks to KevO for sharing this with everyone. Click on the link here to read it or go to the menus. As always it’s confirmed members of the HOA only who will be able to access the articles.

The finished article

Just how did KevO get his Locker Tops looking like this?… Find out here!

Hopefully it won’t be long before this snow clears and we can all get back to the business of readying our boats for launch, this winter has gone on far too long!

Update – Rewire Part 5 – Stereo Install

I’m back!
First let me apologise for the lack of updates over the past few weeks. Things have been pretty hectic in my job as work has just exploded and has simply consumed all my time. In between work and home I’m now getting Hariette B ready for launch in mid April. Whilst launched I’ll be able to enjoy the latest new addition to Hariette B and to the articles section…

Installing a New Stereo
Finally I’ve managed to write the long promised Installing a new stereo article! It’s now in the Articles section and completes the rewire series. Hopefully my experience will help you should you decide to fit a stereo and you won’t do what I did!… What did I do? Read the article to find out :-) As usual, articles are members only.

New Stereo Installation

More Articles and Site Updates
More articles are incoming both around new cockpit seat/locker top installations. One of them is an excellent article from HOA member KevO on refurbishing the teak locker tops in the cockpit. The other from myself on a similar topic but replacing the locker tops with custom made panels made with Permateek. KevO’s article will be up next week. The other will be available when the weather clears and I can fit them :-)

In addition, I’ll be updating the articles area to a more efficient way of accessing them. The sub menus are getting too crowded with articles!! That’s a great position to be in for the HOA :-) There’s other general maintenance that will be happening too but you won’t notice any of that.

Contact form bug fixed!

Status

Now fixed a bug where the contact us form was not passing the email address of anyone who wanted to contact the HOA. I’ve now fixed this. If anyone has submitted a request to join please send your request again so I can see your email address and respond accordingly.

My apologies!

Andy

New Article – Replacing the Forward Windows

Replacing The Forward Windows
HOA member KevO has very kindly written an article explaining how he replaced his Forward Windows on his Hustler 30 “Whitecap”. Click on the link here or head into the members area by logging in and selecting Technical Articles > Exterior and you’ll see it there. The articles are for confirmed members only.
To become a member you need to register, send your boat details and you are in! It’s that easy :)…. Thanks once again Kev it’s very much appreciated!

Site Update – Galleries Changed!

Site Tidy Up
There’s been a few changes on the site especially in the galleries. I’ve installed a new gallery module that improves the old klunky one we had on here. Now the galleries are swipe enabled for tablet devices (you swipe the film strip and tap the images to view), auto size the images that are uploaded and gives a LOT more clarity to the images. If you look at the galleries now, especially the Rally 2002 it’s a lot nicer. As always if you have any high res images of your Hustler send them to us and I’ll post them up.
In addition, I’ve also updated the site to tidy up the headers as some were larger others not.

New Stereo Installed
Finally after a few weeks delay the job is complete and I’ll have the article written ready for next weekend.

Happy New Year !!!

It’s 2013 and we are only 4 months away from the sailing season starting again!!! Here’s hoping we have much better weather than we had last year. 2013 for the HOA means there’s going to be more articles and hopefully at least one Hustler event! Read on…

2013 Hustler Rally
I thought I’d have enough time to arrange one for 2012 but I simply ran out of time. However, 2013 will be different and I’m determined to hold something! So we have two possible locations East Coast (around the Blackwater) or South Coast (around Portsmouth). I’ve created a new topic area in the forums to discuss this further as I really want your views on where this is held, the time of year and the activities. Click here to access the forum area. Sorry but access is for members only so please login so you can see the members forum areas.

Special Offers for HOA members
The first of the special offers for HOA members is here. Wicormarine have a special offer for HOA members. They are offering money off a years berth on their pontoon moorings at Portsmouth Harbour. Please click here for the full details. This is for HOA members only so you’ll need to be logged in to see the page.

Stereo Install Article Coming Soon
Well I thought I’d have this sooner. However, a bad back swiftly followed by the Flu put paid to that plan. So, finally I’ve started work on installing Hariette B’s new stereo. The article will be coming soon. As usual it’s being done to a budget and I’m hoping what I’m putting in will give some ideas. For example I’ll be installing a speaker switch box to physically switch from cockpit to cabin speakers or if I’m really going for it all at once!

Stereo under construction

Should be up by the end of January, weather, work and well being allowing.

Members area now hidden until you login!

Hopefully, this will make things a little less confusing and sometimes frustrating. The members menu now only appears when you enter your login details. This helps you to see straight away whether you are logged in or not and stop the annoying clicking on an article only to get the oops not logged in page.

Winter, Starters & A New Article – Replacement Perspex Washboard

Well, as we are all aware winter is definitely here! I hope you have all had a safe layup with no problems. I covered my H30 with some Tarpaulin hoping to keep the decks that little bit more protected.

However, with the first strong winds the Tarp was shredded and the plastic bottles I’d filled with water to keep the tarp down went brittle with the cold. These were duly cracked open when they swinging in the wind. Needless to say I’ve given up on the tarpaulin cover!

Replacement Perspex Washboard
A massive thank you to Saltire of Clyde for submitting a small write up and some images of his very smart replacement Perspex Washboard. I need to replace my own Washboards and I’ve been in two minds around Perspex or Wood. Having seen Saltire’s results I’m leaning heavily towards Perspex! Confirmed HOA members can find the article here.

Starters and the Re-wire update
I was due to install the new stereo and write the article about it. However, I had another more pressing job which I promised Hariette B I would do. I also needed to change my starter motor for my Volvo Penta 2002 engine. The starter was getting worse towards the end of the season (sometime sticking and turning really sloooooooow). The last time it worked was due to a copious amount of cajoling, promises and prayer.

Hariette B rewarded me by starting the engine (very, very reluctantly) for one last time as long a I promised to sort the problem out as soon as I could. I made my promise and she started and got me home on our last end of season sail. So my first job has been to get the starter out and determine whether to go for a new one or rebuild. I’ve read some horror stories about cheap Chinese starter motors breaking up and wrecking engines. So I went for a total rebuild. All new Danish parts, brand new drive everything for £150 quid inc VAT.

However, when I took the starter off I noticed rust on the engine which was hidden away when I bought her. I can’t leave it like that so I’m in the middle of applying Fertan Rust prevention, then a couple of coats of TK line anti rust primer and finally some good old Volvo green. When that’s done I’ll resume with the stereo as I’ll need to connect all the batteries again when the Starter is in so I’ll combine this with the stereo install.

Hopefully I’ll have the new article in time for Xmas (Time, work, family and Xmas permitting :-))
